GUIDELINES FOR INDICATIONS FOR THE USE OF FFP

 

Clinical Indication

INDICATED USE

-          Single or multiple factor deficiency

-          Warfarin reversal with severe bleeding and no     

           prothrombin complex available

-          Major blood loss with abnormal coagulation in

           DIC

-          Massive Haemorrhage protocol

-          Surgical bleeding and massive blood

            Transfusion

-            TTP 

POSSIBLY INDICATED

-          Liver disease with prolonged PT planned for

           surgery or any other procedure

-          Major blood loss awaiting coagulation results

                -           Correction of coagulopathy prior to surgical

            procedure

NOT INDICATED

-          Hypovolemia

-          Formula replacement

-          Reversal of warfarin or abnormal coagulation

            without bleeding or planned surgery

-          Vit K deficiency in ITU

 GREEN INDICATIONS Request FFP via laboratory stating reason for request. 

AMBER INDICATIONS The laboratory staff may require further clarification of indication and may refer requestor to Consultant Haematologist.

In emergency situations, a conditional dose of 4 unit may be issued pending further results or confirmation. 

RED INDICATIONS For requests in this category, the requestor may be referred to the Consultant Haematologist to discuss the request
