Test Directory -  Amikacin assay

Request Form 

Combined Pathology Blood form (Yellow/Black or Blue for GP's) with date and time blood sample collected.

Availability

On request.

Specific Criteria

For multiple daily Amikacin dosing, levels should be taken as follows::
a) Pre-dose: immediately prior to the drug being given
b) Post-dose: 1 hour after dose
It is acceptable, and preferable, to send pre- and post-dose samples together, with one request form, but the samples MUST be clearly labelled as pre- or post-dose and with the time of collection.

Patient Preparation

Multi dose regimens: dosage should be 12 hourly.
First assays should be undertaken on the the third or fourth doses.

Turnaround Time

Performed on the same day within 2 hours of receipt in the laboratory

Container

Yellow top (SST) tube. For patients on haemodialysis, blood in a green top (Lithium heparin) tube is preferred.

Collection

Samples should be transported to laboratory immediately.

Lab. Handling

Perform the assay assay soon as possible.

Factors which affect results  

Do not use grossly haemolysed, contaminated or highly lipaemic samples.

Causes for Rejection

Incorrectly and/or Insufficiently labelled sample
Not meeting specific criteria for analysis

Reference Range

For multi-dose regimen:
Pre-dose -    <10.0 mg/L          (multiple dose regime)
Post-dose -    20.0 - 25.0 mg/L (multiple dose regime)
