Clinical Indications

Investigation and monitoring of myeloma, and other B-cell dyscrasias. 
Further investigation of an abnormal band in serum. Please note: it is not necessary to request urine bence jones protein if serum free light chains have been analysed.

Specific Criteria

None. A repeat will be requested if urine is too dilute.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled sample, assay within previous month.

Reference Range

Negative screen.
Further investigations will be performed if screen is positive: confirmation, and identification of the protein. See laboratory investigation of suspected myeloma.

Lab. Handling

Processing: Aliquot for urine creatinine into an AU tube then primary sample is stored in the separating fridge (CB39) BJP rack at 4C until analysis
