Test Directory -  Clostridium difficile

Test Includes

Detection of Clostridium difficile antigen (GDH) in faeces
Specimens which test positive for GDH will then be tested for Clostridium difficile toxin production

Availability

On request during normal working hours

Specific Criteria

Please give detailed clinical information including: details of any recent, current, or intended, antibiotic therapy; date of onset/contact with any suspected infection.

Turnaround Time

The GDH test will usually be performed by the end of the next day following receipt of the sample
If indicated, follow-up toxin testing will then be performed

Specimen

Faeces, Liquid or Semi-liquid and patient needs to be 2 yrs and older

Container

Blue capped universal container with spoon

Collection

Samples should be transported to laboratory as soon as possible

Lab. Handling

Samples should be processed on day of receipt

Causes for Rejection

Incorrectly and/or Insufficiently labelled sample
If a positive GDH result is obtained, testing of further samples should be discussed with the Consultant Microbiologist, Ext 3557, prior to requesting the test.

Patients with C. diff. toxin positives results will not be tested until 28 days have past since last detection.

If a negative GDH result was obtained in the past 7 days, testing of further samples should be discussed with the Consultant Microbiologist, Ext 3557,  prior to requesting the test.
