Test Directory -  Haemoglobin S Screen


Sickledex, Sickle Sol, Sickle Solubility Test, Sickle Screen, HbS.

Clinical Indications

To confirm or exclude presence of Haemoglobin S as a confirmation test as part of the haemoglobinopathy screen or in cases of urgent clinical need prior to emergency surgery etc.

The test will be performed on urgent requests (pre-op) where there is insufficient time to perform HPLC. Please phone the laboratory to request urgent testing. Test performed when confirming HPLC results.

Whole blood (EDTA)


1 x 3 ml.


Purple top (EDTA) tube (however, any anticoagulated sample may be used)

Lab. Handling

Hb variants requiring confirmation or definitive diagnosis are  sent to Royal London Hospital.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled / inadequately sample. Clotted sample.


This test is unreliable:
i) In infants less than 3 months old.
ii) In the presence of Dextrans.

iii) In the presence of abnormal levels of serum protein,.
