Test Directory -  High vaginal swab



Test Includes

Microscopy for pregnant women and bacterial vaginosis - only if requested or clinically indicated
Culture for yeasts, Trichomonas vaginalis and culture for bacterial pathogens

Specific Criteria

High vaginal swabs are NOT suitable for the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) or the detection of Chlamydia trachomatis
If gonorrhoea is suspected, send cervical and urethral swabs or, refer the patient to the Department of Genito-Urinary Medicine at Orsett Hospital  (See test information for Chlamydia by clicking here)

Please give detailed clinical information, including the date of onset/contact with the suspected infection and any current or intended antibiotic therapy

Turnaround Time

24 to 48 hours to identify and perform antibiotic sensitivity on significant organisms and a further 48 hours for GC sensitivities.

Samples should be processed as soon as possible

Causes for Rejection

Incorrectly and/or Insufficiently labelled sample
Delay in sample reaching laboratory
