Clinical Indications

Diagnosis of leukaemia and lymphoproliferative disorders

Request Form

 Cell Markers request form, completed by consultant haematologist.


Analysed by referral laboratory if specific criteria met.

Specific Criteria

Requested by Consultant Haematologist or if agreed with Consultant Haematologist.

Turnaround Time

24 hours to 1 week depending on referral laboratory and urgency


For acute leukaemias and MDS: 1 x EDTA, 3 unfixed peripheral blood smears, 2 unfixed bone marrow smears if available.
For lymphoproliferative disorders; 2 x EDTA (3ml (1x) EDTA acceptable if lymphocyte count is >10) also 2 x unfixed blood films if sample is not being referred to Southend.

Samples should be transported to laboratory immediately

Lab. Handling

Do not refrigerate samples. Can be stored overnight if courier available next day. Send by courier or first class post to referral Hospital

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled / inadequately labelled sample. Not meeting specific criteria for analysis. Sample contaminated (sample used for FBC analysis)
