Skin antibodies are helpful in the investigation of bullous skin disorders.

Unlabelled sample; insufficient clinical information.

Reference Range

Normal result = negative.


Positive results have an immunofluorescence pattern reported. Pemphigus antibodies react with the epidermal keratinocyte surface, giving a ‘chicken-wire’ pattern. Pemphigoid antibodies to the dermo-epidermal junction show a linear pattern

Bullous pemphigoid is mainly a disease of the elderly, antibody levels do not correlate with activity.

Pemphigus vulgaris is potentially fatal, antibody levels reflect disease activity.

Lab. Handling

Processing: Aliquot (MPA) and store at 4°C in separating fridge (CB39), referral rack.
: OSASK and send or BPRO and store at -20°C in separating freezer (CB40).
