CD4, T-cell count

Clinical Indications

Test used for monitoring the treatment of known positive HIV patients. Do not use this test as a surrogate marker for HIV.

Test Includes

CD3, CD4, CD8. A full blood count must also be requested at the same time.

Request Form

Combined Pathology Blood form (Yellow/Black or Blue for GP's)


On request. Please note this test is not available at weekends. Samples must be received by the referral lab no later than 4.30 on Fridays. Analysed by referral laboratory at Southend Hospital

Specific Criteria

Not to be used this test as a surrogate marker for HIV.

Turnaround Time

Two working days


Whole blood


2 x 3 ml


Two purple top (EDTA) tubes.


Samples should be transported to laboratory immediately.

Lab. Handling

Perform FBC as soon as possible and send copy of FBC results to referral lab with sample for T-Cell subsets.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled / inadequately labelled samples.
Delay in sample reaching laboratory, arrival in referral lab after 4.30 on Friday
