Microbiology form (Green)


 This test is available from Monday to Friday, but samples MUST to be in the Microbiology lab before 13:30, on the day of collection.

Specific Criteria

Please give detailed clinical information, including date of onset/contact with the suspected infection

Samples MUST be transported to the Microbiology Laboratory immediately; must NOT be more than 6 hours old at the time of receipt by Microbiology, and MUST be received by 13:30 on the day of sample collection, to allow time for transportation to the referral laboratory.

Turnaround Time

All tests will be set up on the day of receipt.  The test normally, takes two days to complete and requires a second reading to confirm the result.  Therefore, the results will be available 3-5 days after sample receipt.


Whole blood


Children 2-9 years: 1x4 ml tube; children 10 years and over, adults: 2x4 ml tubes


Lithium Heparin vacutainer


Label the tubes towards the top

Allow the tubes to completely fill with blood

Invert tube(s) 8-10 times immediately after collection

Keep at room temperature at all times - do NOT chill or freeze.  Live cells are required for this test, any cooling or delay in receipt by Microbiology will adversely affect cell viability

Lab. Handling

Store at room temperature, prior to transporting to referral laboratory.

Causes for Rejection

Unlabelled sample

Sample over 6 hours old on receipt
Sample received after 13:30 on day of sample collection

Wrong sample type
