Test Directory -  Beta-2 Transferrin (Tau protein)

Synonyms

Asialotransferrin, Tau transferrin, Tau protein.
N.B. The terminology tau transferrin/protein is discouraged as there may be confusion with a unrelated neuronal microtubule associated protein (also called tau protein) found in CSF and used as a biomarker for dementia and neurodegeneration.

Clinical Indications

This test is a consideration in the differential diagnosis for CSF otorrhea or CSF rhinorrhea. Beta-2 transferrin is not detected in normal serum, tears, saliva, sputum, nasal, aural fluid, or endolymph by this method.

Interpretation

Detection of a beta-2 transferrin band by IFE is diagnostic for the presence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Lab Handling

 

Processing: Store at 4C in separating fridge (CB39), referral rack.
Referral
:  SASOD and send or BPRO and track at -20C in separating freezer (CB40).
